Business isn’t Tinder (thank god)

Talk So They Buy
By Ian Efford
Hi Reader!
Welcome back to my newsletter. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read this edition!
I want to say how grateful I am that business isn't completely like the online dating scene...
Because I never got matches on Tinder. If you look at my appearance, that shouldn't surprise anyone.
I'm fit, but not jacked. I don't look like Thor. I don't have the six-pack, the brooding selfies, or the yacht photos. On a platform built for surface-level swipes, I don't stand a chance.
None of the things I actually bring to a relationship, a sense of humor, shared values, interesting conversations, mattered if people never swiped right in the first place.
At least I used to stand a chance of building a business on LinkedIn.
But... that's slowly changing.
Exploring buyer phrases on Reddit
You can have the perfect solution to someone’s problem. You can be the exact person who could save them months of struggle.
However, if you even try to start a conversation with someone on LinkedIn, they'll automatically think you're going to pitch them without consent.
We can thank all the LinkedIn gurus out there for this perception...
You're just another "sales guru" to your buyers. So, the best thing we can do is hope the right person stumbles across our offer. Cross our fingers that someone will “swipe right” and book a call.
That's all we can do, right?
No, I learned something else. Something that will help us send emails, run ads, and start conversations people are willing to reply to.
And that 'something' is:
Buyers leave breadcrumbs when they’re ready to buy.
They say things like:
“I’m stuck getting clients.”
“I need help fixing my offer.”
“I’ve tried everything, but nothing’s working.”
These aren’t just frustrations. They’re neon signs flashing, “I need help right now.”

So instead of swiping in the dark, I started tracking those phrases. I built a tool that analyzes hundreds of conversations per day and sets alerts for specific phrases.
Now, whenever a buyer raises their hand, even if they don’t know me yet, I’m there to start a conversation.
It’s the difference between hoping someone discovers you… and being the person they already recognize as the answer when they’re ready.
Because THANK GOD that business isn't about looking like Thor.
Business is about lining up two parallel universes: 1) people who are vocal when they need help, and 2) the expert who actively promotes their offers.
Often, these two universes don't line up, but they can with the right tool.
And that's all! I hope you enjoyed and learned something from this edition.
